Following the burial of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the former governor of Lagos State who passed on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 91, Dr. Paul Okoye, the President General of Ndigbo Royal Heritage Worldwide, NIROH, has commiserated with the people of South West, Nigeria, especially Lagos, asking them to take solace in the indelible marks left behind by the erudite politician, whose achievements as the governor between 1979 and 1983 have remained unrivaled.

In a statement, Okoye called on politicians to bear in mind that their achievements in office would always be the yardstick with which they would be judged by posterity. “Alhaji Lateef Jakande, live well and as we mourn him, politicians of today should note that what matters is the legacy they will leave behind when they are out of office. I am aware that in just four years, Jakande was able to complete so many legacy projects in Lagos state at a time when resources were very lean. What we see today is different. Some spend 8 years in office with nothing to show for it. That is not acceptable if we want our society to develop. I urge politicians in the S’East, especially to emulate the good works of Alhaji Lateef Jakande as well as those of Michael Okpara. The two left legacies which will speak for them from generation to generation. Service delivery, accountability and integrity should be the hallmark of anyone aspiring to be in political office. Being a leader is not a call for jamboree procession,” the statement read.

In the same vein, Okoye urged Ndi Igbo to cultivate the habit of holding their politicians accountable, noting that this would help in delivering their expectations as they yearn for development.
